A roll-in shower makes bathing more accessible by reducing or eliminating the barrier at the shower entrance. For wheelchair users, older adults, and people with limited mobility, the right shower design can make daily bathing easier while accommodating seating, grab bars, and caregiver assistance.
Barrier Free Plus designs and installs custom roll-in showers and barrier-free bathroom modifications throughout Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties, Michigan. Our licensed and insured team includes Certified Aging-in-Place Specialists who help homeowners plan shower modifications around their mobility needs and existing bathroom layout.
A roll-in shower may be appropriate when stepping over a bathtub wall or shower curb has become difficult, or when someone needs to enter the bathing area using a wheelchair or other mobility equipment.
Common reasons to consider a roll-in shower include:
A wheelchair user needs an accessible shower entrance.
An older adult wants to reduce the need to step over a bathtub wall.
Someone uses a walker or needs additional stability when entering the shower.
A caregiver needs more room to assist with bathing.
A family is planning bathroom modifications for changing mobility needs.
A roll-in shower is not automatically the best option for every bathroom. The available space, type of mobility equipment, drainage requirements, and whether the user bathes seated or standing all affect the design.
Our custom roll-in showers are specially designed to meet all ADA compliance specifications. Let our designers decide whether one-piece shower stall, multi-piece shower kit, or full custom ceramic tile shower will be the best fit for you. Our designers can include folding shower seats, fixed shower seats, grab bars, recessed wall niches, ADA compliant shower fixtures with extended hand-held shower wand, and more.
Most bathrooms are not properly designed for people in wheelchairs or to allow people to safely age in place. Don’t worry, our aging-in-place experts are fully able to convert your existing bathroom into a safe space. If you or your loved one needs a roll-in shower, or you are the caregiver, we have a solution for you.
So, what defines an accessible roll-in shower? What is barrier-free? In short, accessible roll-in showers have a barrier-free entrance, or super-low threshold so that anyone in a wheelchair or with limited mobility can safely enter and exit without stepping up and over anything. Some of these ADA-compliant roll-in showers utilize foldable shower seats, while most utilize your own wheelchair. If you or a loved one doesn’t need a wheelchair, barrier-free showers allow you to step directly into the shower without stepping over any sort of trip hazard. Because there no being trip hazard, barrier-free showers are also referred to as curbless showers. ADA handicap-accessible showers also include grab bars and may include height-adjustable shower heads.
We remove tubs and old stalls and build curbless, roll-in showers that are safe for wheelchair users, walker users and caregivers. Barrier Free Plus is a licensed and insured contractor based in Macomb Township, with Certified Aging-in-Place Specialists on our team.

Every home is different, so we give you a written quote after measuring.
Plumbing and structural changes usually need permits from the local building department. We confirm what applies before work begins.
A typical tub-to-roll-in-shower conversion takes about one to two weeks, depending on floor work and finishes.
Eligible veterans may qualify for VA home modification grants (SAH, SHA and HISA); see our veterans information page. Older adults can also ask their Area Agency on Aging or case manager whether a waiver or community program covers home modifications. We can provide a written quote for any funding application.
What is the difference between a roll-in and a walk-in shower?
A roll-in shower has no curb, so a wheelchair or shower chair can roll straight in. A walk-in shower may still have a low lip.
Will water get out of a curbless shower?
The floor is sloped to a drain, often a linear drain, and we size the shower area and use a weighted curtain or partial glass to keep water in.
Can grab bars go anywhere?
Grab bars must be anchored into blocking or framing. We add blocking during the remodel so bars can go exactly where you need them.
